The trial of Steven Powell on charges of voyeurism and possession of child pornography is expected to last a week and Powell is expected to fight the allegations.
On Thursday, a final court hearing was held in Tacoma before Powell’s trial is scheduled to begin March 20.
Powell, the father of Josh Powell and father-in-law of Susan Cox Powell, the West Valley mother of two who has been missing for more than two years, was arrested in September and later charged in Pierce County Superior Court with 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of child pornography.
Steven Powell is accused of using a telephoto lens to take pictures of his neighbors’ young children without their knowledge while they were in a bathroom.
According to court documents filed during an omnibus hearing on Thursday, Steven Powell’s defense attorneys indicated the general nature of their defense would be “general denial.” Other possible answers available to defense attorneys, but not chosen, were “alibi,” “consent,” “insanity” and “diminished capacity.”
A box on the court papers labeled, “Defense has received a plea offer from the state,” was left unchecked.
The court papers also say Steven Powell has no known prior criminal convictions.
The picture of Steven Powell above is a good likeness of what lies within the soul of this pervert. I tend to put the onus directly on him for all the problems, not only in his marriage, but for creating a monster of a son, Josh Powell. Steven’s perverted infatuation with Susan and his control over Josh led to Susan’s demise and then the two boys, Charlie and Braden.
Now will this old pervert cop a plea when it gets closer to his trial date? I will bet the farm that Steven knows exactly how Susan died and where the body was hidden. I would love to know the ingredients in that pancake recipe Steven told Josh how to make via their phone conversation. Susan had to go lie down shortly after she ate the eggs and pancakes that Josh individually dished up to her, the boys and the company.

Okay. I know that can’t, and shouldn’t, be done. Its just that I despise him all the more now that the boys have been murdered. I blame Josh 100% for that but his father did a bit of life molding with Josh’s psyche as a kid, I’m sure.
Cali~~I visited Steven’s website where he has oodles of pictures of himself and the music he wrote for Susan. You could tell right away that he is full of himself. ( I know what he is really full of) Why would that old slime bucket think a young pretty woman like Susan would want him? She had a young verile husband and if Steven had left them alone, things may have worked out. Steven even sent Susan porn via the mail when Susan and Josh moved to Utah. Disgusting!
Sherry~~I truly believe that Steven masterminded Susan’s murder. Susan was going to leave Josh and that would mean her getting custody of the boys. Steven wanted those boys to be with Josh so Josh could program them all about incest being normal within a family. Steven seemed to be the leader of a cult that believed in family incest. Josh was just one of his followers and became so demented himself, he went beserk. There is still a brother of Josh’s who runs naked all around the house. Charlie and Braden had to be exposed to that when Josh moved to Washington. Thank God the boys were taken out of there when Steven was charged with the porn and voyeurism.
I should have added that Charlie and Braden had a bit of normalcy with the Cox’s until they were tortured then burned to death.
I agree with you Snoopy. I think Steven is just as responsible as Josh is for Susans death. He may not have physically done the deed but he had complete control over Josh, He created the monster who murdered his wife and boys. He cultivated and groomed Josh to be as sick as him. I haven’t heard hardly anything about the other brother but it sounds like he was a sicko as well.

Joshua Powell was born January 20, 1976 in Spokane, the largest city in Eastern Washington, not far from the Idaho border along Interstate 90. Feb. 9, 2012 Josh Powell, the husband of a missing Utah woman who killed himself and his two young sons last week, was a disturbed adolescent who threatened and hit his mother, according to 1992 court documents obtained by ABC News. The documents, filed during the divorce of Josh Powell’s parents in Washington state, Steven and Terrica Powell, include several statements by Terrica Powell describing her son’s disturbing behavior. Terrica Powell wrote that her son once tried to commit suicide and also threatened her with a butcher knife. On other occasions, he and one of his brothers pushed and hit her, she wrote.
The butcher knife incident, Terrica Powell wrote, was the result of her asking her son to do the dishes.
The divorce of Steve and Terrica Powell involved allegations of mental unfitness, pornography, polygamy and even witchcraft. There were serious conflicts over religion and parenting, and a tug-of-war ensued over the children, who at the time ranged in age from 18 to 7. Josh, the second oldest child, was 16.
Steve eventually was given custody of the three boys, while Terrica had custody of Alina, their youngest daughter — though within a couple years she also went to live with her father.
In 1992 court filings, Steve claimed his wife, who studied herbs and natural healing, had mixed a New Age mysticism with Mormon beliefs in a way that amounted to practicing “witch craft and devil worship.”
Terrica responded that it was Steve who collected books on the occult and claimed his interest in pornography, which he had shared with their sons, had corrupted him.
“A huge part of that case involved the pornographic interest of Steven Powell and the impact it was having on the children,” said Tacoma attorney Steve Downing, who represents Powell’s in-laws Chuck and Judy Cox.

I do not know if his family is still there.” That is fine and great that he went to Pierce College (Not Pierce Community College), but they do not grant bachelor’s degrees, only associates degrees. He probably got a two year, then transferred to a 4 year college. End result? He still has no 4 year degree.
Marini’s husband, Tim, met Joshua Powell in 1999 at the singles ward in Tacoma, Wash. The couples were close until Rachel Marini had a falling out with Joshua Powell during a road trip from Utah to Washington several years ago. Rachel Marini, who met the couple shortly after they wed in 2001.
“She had lots of people tell her to end it and get a divorce because it was not worth going through that kind of heartache,” Marini said. “But Susan didn’t want to give up on her marriage.”
However, the Marinis stayed close with Susan via Facebook. Over the past year or so, Susan told the couple the relationship “was still pretty bad, but that for the first time, Susan started standing up for herself,” Rachel Marini said.
Mr. Powell reported he : met at Mormon Ward function. They were about age 20. He estimated he were together for 16 months. The couple dated for about a year prior to living together. During their relationship, they had been attending college. One point in their relatiormhip, they took a “break” and during this period ?susan? dated other men. Once and Josh got back together, he learned more about s involvement with another rrian and this had eroded his trust rn her. Ultimately, this caused the end of their relationship.
Mr. Powell met Susan in 2000, when he was 24 and Susan was 19. They met at a Mormon sponsored function. In April 2001, after dating about six months, the couple married. Mr. Powell reported a positive marriage. He noted that eventually Susan’s parents urged her to have a separate bank account. He noted he had been agreeable to this idea and stated, “It was like an allowance. Each one of us was to have fun-money to spend without having to discuss it with each other.

Divorce documents shed light on Josh Powell’s troubles
Steve and three siblings were taken by paternal grandparents and kept for a year before being reunited with their mother, whom they were told they’d never see again. The experience was “very damaging,” Terrica wrote.
She thought their older boys would benefit from counseling, too, to “undo that faulty thinking that he has established in them.”
The couple were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when they married, but Steve had become disillusioned with the faith and it became a flashpoint in the marriage — a pattern later repeated in Josh’s own marriage.
Like his parents, Josh and Susan married in an LDS temple; like his father, Josh later became disaffected from the faith.
At one point, Terrica said, Steve proclaimed he had a “right” to take another wife and had his eye on a woman who was already married, writing a song about her and detailing sexual fantasies in his journal.
Steve’s parenting was equally off-base, Terrica told the court. Her husband would ignore certain behaviors of their children and then suddenly turn on them “far more violently than was necessary or fair,” which would result in yelling, name calling and spankings that were too forceful and too long.
Steve subjected Josh in particular to this contradictory, overly harsh discipline, she said.
“For years, he pointedly attacked Josh very frequently, nearly every day for a time,” she wrote.

Mysticalpippin~~that other brother is John. He is the one who runs around the house naked and even answered the door in the nude. I am assuming Alina, Josh’s sister takes care of him. I haven’t heard that she ever got married. Josh was living in Steven’s house right up until the time he murdered his boys. He just rented a house and used it as a ruse for the supervised visitations with the boys. In the write up above, it mentions Josh and refers to Jennifer Graves as being the estranged sister. I still don’t know why they keep referring to 4 children of Steven when I count five.
In every “group” there are always the bad apples. During the years of raising my boys they had friends of all religious sects. Every Mormon friend had a great family home with involved caring parents. It was a great religion to raise a family in. That was my experience with the Mormon family’s around here. I am surprised the church did not excommunicate him or did they?
Cali~~I know little to nothing about the Mormon religion. I understand that Steven broke away from the religion while he was still married. Maybe they did not agree with porn and voyeurism. Josh eventually left the church and followed in his father’s footsteps. You could say that both Steven and Josh turned vile against the Mormons. I think a lot of it was due to the Cox’s being devout Mormons.
By the way, does Alina have any children? This woman scares me. If all the children grew up in the same house. What is she like? If she believes Josh is innocent, I am wondering what goes on in her house. Plus she did go live with her Deranged father, she had to of been exposed to the same things.
shyloh~ ~all I know is that Alina went with her mother when the parents split up and then she went back to live with Steven. He must have had her really brainwashed. I have never heard that she has any children or ever was married. I think she must be the one who runs Steven’s household and takes care of John, her brother that is mentally challenged and runs around in the nude or just dressed in a diaper. I understand Steven lost his job when he was charged with the porn and voyeurism and his house went into foreclosure. Josh still lived there up until the time he murdered the boys. I wonder if Josh was attracted to knee caps or the calves, maybe ankles, thighs?? Sorry, I can’t figure some of these people out.
